Nature Study Monday - Link up. {Mounting an Insect}
In just a few words, but with lots of pictures which are worth more, I'm gonna show you our latest nature study project. We did in fact find this inside our house, but that's nothing new. Thankfully, it was already dead. For one, we were spared the drama, and two, we got to mount him instead of smash him! ;)

What a huge spider! My spider-loving 13 year-old son wants to know...any idea what kind it is?

ReplyDeletelisa and son, my classification of spiders before today = 'brown spider', 'black spider', 'big spider', 'hairy spider', etc.
ReplyDelete'kay. so, admittedly, i knew nothing about spider identification. after today, i now know something, but still spider identification looks to be something of a scientific art.
because of this, i will not be trying my hand at 'guessing' what kind of spider this is. however, i did find out enough to fill another blog post on the subject, so keep your eyes peeled if you are interested in this kind of thing. ;)

ReplyDeletetammy, sad to say it hardly phased me at this point. though it was already dead. we've found multiple tarantulas, which before id-ing this one, seem to make it pale in comparison... ;)

Doing weekly nature study with a group and recording our outings keeps me accountable as I work toward making nature study part of our family rhythm.
And now we're headed this week on a little family vacation to a river house a couple hours away--I am looking forward to sharing lots more when we're back! We're going with binoculars, field guides, and nature journals in tow, for sure. :)
